General Knowledge of Data Recovery (1)

Nowadays, data has become precious assets for individuals and institutions. Hence, it’s very essential to learn some general knowledge of data recovery to keep your data intact and secure. What should you do after data get lost, deleted, formatted, corrupted? Do you know related factors that can affect the rate of data recovery? What issues need to be valued in daily data processing? Here, some important tips will be listed to increase the possibility of data recovery.

Points for attention after data loss
  • No secondary damage. Secondary damage due to improper operations can result in less possibility of data recovery. Therefore, do not write new data to source disk again after losing data to avoid overwriting.
  • Do not save recovered data to source disk. Recovered data are not recommended to save to original disk where files lost in case data get overwritten.
  •  No disk check. Generally, after errors happen in system operations, the system will automatically prompt to check disk when entering to boot screen. It will check disk in 10 seconds by default. This operation can fix some little damaged directory files, while usually it has enormous destruction to data due to its incompetence to restore complex directory structures.
  • No re-formatting partition. Data will lose due to change of type at first format. Original format can’t be scanned by less-professional recovery software, so users may attempt to format it to original format for scan. What I have to point out is that re-formatting partition is really a not-so-clever operation because it can make some large files --which can be recovered in great possibility-- lost permanently.
  •  No rebuilding partition. It’s easy to destroy the file allocation table (FAT) and master file table (MFT) by rebuilding or creating partition in original partition after partition get damaged or deleted.
  • No redoing array after losing. Please note that any operations referring to writing data to disk can be a disaster for lost data.
  • No new files are allowed to be saved in the partition which is ready to be recovered. Before scanning and recovering data, you’d better close download tools and unnecessary apps, and disconnect from the internet. To recover system partition, I suggest that you can make computer power-off and transfer hard drive to another computer for recovery, if there’s no crucial files like database in the computer after data lost. That is because data may be damaged due to automatically written data from operating system no matter what status computer is in, shut down or power on.
To put it simple, you must stop any operation in the computer especially the disk where data lost. And immediately transfer hard drive to another computer for recovery with professional data recovery software.

Which factors will have impact on the success rate of data recovery? As for this issue, we’ll continue it in next article.
